The Centro district of Madrid is the oldest and most historic in the city. Its origins date back to the 9th century AD when it was used as a fortress. Much later, it became the capital of Spain under Austrian monarchs, which explains the architecture of the city. You can either get a taxi from Madrid Airport to the city centre, or use the public bus and train services. Centro is full of tourist landmarks. The Palacio Real de Madrid is a beautiful piece of architecture with landscape gardens. Next to this is the Catedral de Almudena, with colourful interior chapels. There are a number of historical basilicas, churches and museums, as well as the famous Teatro Español. To relax, tourists head to Plaza Mayor to sit with a beer in the terraces, full of bars and restaurants. A short walk away is Chocolatería San Ginés, which is the oldest and most famous place in Madrid for churros. These are must visits when in Madrid! Visitors can enjoy the panoramic view of the city from Círculo de Bellas Artes and shop their heart out on Calle Gran Vía. Centro is the trendiest place to live, in areas such as Justicia, Cortes, Chueca, Sol and the Royal Palace.
