The Centro district of Madrid is the oldest and most historic in the city. Its origins date back to the 9th century AD when it was used as a fortress, although it wasn't until much later that it was given the status of city and became the capital of Spain under Austrian monarchs, hence the imposing architecture that can be found around its neighbourhoods. Centro is perhaps the trendiest district to live in, with neighbourhoods including Justicia, near Retiro park, Cortes, the lively Chueca, Sol, and the Royal Palace area.
