The corporate headquarters of the MAPFRE Foundation was the venue chosen to officially present the 37th edition of the Copa del Rey MAPFRE, which will be held in Palma de Mallorca from 28 July to 4 August.
More than 100 guests attended the presentation, including sponsors, the media and yachtsmen. Among them were José Manuel Inchausti, CEO of the Iberia Territorial Area of MAPFRE; Guenther Seemann, Executive Chairman of BMW Group Spain and Portugal; Javier Sanz, President of the Real Club Nautico de Palma; and, naturally, Alejandra Vanoli, Managing Director of Balearics Sotheby’s International Realty.
Javier Sanz, president of the club organising the regatta, officially opened the event by saying that “this is the third time that we have decided to present the Copa del Rey MAPFRE in Madrid. It is also the third time I can claim that the regatta continues to grow. According to the latest pre-registration data, the 37th Copa del Rey will set a new record in terms of competitor numbers - over 150 boats - and will again be an unmissable event for top-class sailing in the Mediterranean”.
Major changes this year
Everything suggests that the Copa del Rey MAPFRE this year will again be one of the most important given the extremely high number of registrations expected.
The biggest change this year will be the Melges 40 class debut and the six-metre fleet, which will take part as a guest class in two divisions: classic and modern. Among the teams confirmed will be the Movistar team's Bribon, a boat skippered by H.M. King Juan Carlos, who was declared world champion in this class in Vancouver last September.
The competition schedule, which kicks off on Monday 30 July, includes a maximum of 20 regattas for the GC32, 12 for the Melges 40 and J80, and 11 for the remaining classes over the six days that the event will last.
The Copa del Rey MAPFRE, also a social event
The Copa del Rey MAPFRE is much more than just a regatta. Its busy competition schedule is complemented on land by an exceptional social agenda that will play a central role this summer in Palma. Celebrities, partners and guests will mingle with the close on 1,500 crew members to enjoy a busy schedule on land that includes parties, culinary tasting sessions and gala dinners, as well as live music and a great atmosphere at the Crew Village every evening until 21:00.
As every year, the calendar of social events scheduled for the 37th Copa del Rey MAPFRE includes three major events: the Yachtsmen’s Party; the Boat-owners’ Dinner; and the Trophy Award Ceremony at Ses Voltes - a unique space located next to the Gothic Cathedral of Mallorca.
